Ammolite is found in shale beds in Alberta, Canada. Ammonites were deposited and fossilized in layers in the shale, and crushed, leaving their beautiful nacre behind. It is a fragile stone, and Ammolite cabochons are either capped with quartz, like an opal doublet, or covered with an epoxy to stabilize the surface. This piece has a quartz cap. Ammolite comes in many colors, and the beautiful colors are often directional. I shot a picture in light to show some of the shine.

Wrapped in 14 karat gold filled wire. 14 karat gold fill wire is durable, containing about 100 times more gold than gold plate. It is considered to be heirloom quality.
